Supporting Our Local Food, Our Economy and Our Environment

The Okanagan Food website is a partnership between the Center for Social, Spatial and Economic Justice (CSSEJ) at the University of British Columbia Okanagan and the Food Action Society of the North Okanagan. The aim of this site is to nurture a community of local food, advocating connections between producers and citizens, and citizens to the local economy and our environment.

The information displayed on this site is a collective effort of FASNO members, local food advocates, and students at CCSEJ to provide a resource to access, discuss and learn about our local food in the North Okanagan region. We encourage people from the North Okanagan to submit information to portal, either by registering on the site and submitting articles, directory listings or your community voice through video, photos' or podcasts (audio only). If you register on the site, you can add & edit your listings, submit articles and make you own maps with Geolive.

Food Maps: Contains google maps with local food producers, processors and retailers easily allowing you to find where the closest local food source is to you.

Food Directory: The local food directory allows you to search for the type of food, or a specific business's information, with a google map to give you directions on how to get there. As well you can add  your business to the directory for others to find, by clicking on Add Listing in the directories page. Your entry will wait to be approved by the administrator to avoid spam to the site.

Geolive: A new mapping application that allows you to easily add your own marker to the map with embedded media such as youtube videos, picasa photo's or podcasts. The application also allows you to have a discussion based on the information.

Community Voices: In this section you will hear from local food advocates and community members on different topics about local food, in the form of short youtube videos, podcasts and written stories, embedded in the location of the maps they take place. If you have something to contribute, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and keep the conversation rolling. Over the summer of 2009 we made a web series on local food initiatives check out Cultivating Change: A Story About Food in the North Okanagan in this section and under Media Gallery.

Media Gallery: Contains the various media used in this project, including photo's contributed from various farms, and youtube videos either contributed or a part of our web series.
